The importance of season long nitrogen

When Corn Takes Up Nitrogen

Managing nitrogen isn’t a one-time event.  Eric Scherder, Dow AgroSciences field scientist says for growers to optimize yield – nutrient management is important all season long.

He says a nitrogen stabilizer can be crucial to a grower’s success.  “By maintaining more of that nitrogen in the root zone, longer into the season – we’ve not only optimized the farmer’s fertilizer investment, so it is efficient and it isn’t wasting dollars,” he says.  “We’re also optimizing potential yield.”

For growers in the eastern Corn Belt, Scherder says this spring has been even more challenging.  “We’re delayed on application of fertilizer and planting in general,” he says.  “What we’re causing in those situations is the perfect storm.  One in which there is ample moisture in our soils and warmer than usual temperatures.  Both of which really drive nitrification.”

He says in that environment,  stabilizing nitrogen in the crop’s root zone as long as possible during the season is even more important for growers to see maximum yield potential at harvest.
