1972: Drake's Rick Wanamaker, left, and Graceland's Bruce Jenner compete in the Drake Relays decathlon 100-meter dash. Wanamaker ran 11.0 seconds and Jenner ran 11.2 in this race, but Jenner finished first in the overall decathlon standings. Jenner won the 1976 Olympic gold medal and later became a TV star. "I spent a lot of time around Bruce Jenner in 1969-1974," Wanamaker recently told the Register. "We both competed in the 1971 and 1972 Drake Relays; the 1971, 1973 and 1974 national decathlon championships, and the Olympic Trials in 1972. We traveled to Russia together and competed in the USA-USSR dual meet in 1974."
