Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

NSF Smart and Connected Health Aspiring Investigators Workshop, 2015

April 20th, 2015 / in Announcements, NSF / by Helen Wright

U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is holding a Smart and Connected Health (SCG) Aspiring Investigators Workshop in Arlington, VA on June 29.

This workshop will be an informational and interactive opportunity for the Aspiring Investigators to develop skills and address the knowledge gaps necessary to submit a successful Smart and Connected Health (SCH) proposal. The goal of the SCH Program is to accelerate the development and use of innovative approaches that would support the much needed transformation of health and healthcare from reactive and hospital-centered to preventive, proactive, evidence-based, person-centered. The purpose of this interagency program solicitation is the development of next generation health and healthcare research through high-risk, high-reward advances in the understanding of and applications in information science, computer science, behavior, cognition, sensors, robotics, bioimaging, and engineering. Collaboration between academic and other organizations is encouraged to establish better linkages between fundamental science, health and technology development, deployment and use. Realizing the promise of disruptive transformation in health and healthcare will require well-coordinated, multi-disciplinary approaches that draw from the social, behavioral, and economic sciences, engineering, medicine, biology, and computer and information sciences.

The Aspiring Investigator workshop will support the development of researchers interested in submitting research to the SCH program. The workshop will accomplish this through mentorship and didactic sessions to acquaint Aspiring Investigators with the key issues associated with SCH, the joint NSF-NIH review process and the breadth of existing projects funded by the SCH program. In addition to this one-day workshop, invited participants can stay through the annual SCH principal investigators’ meeting on June 30-July 1, 2015 at the same location. The interactions fostered through this workshop and the subsequent SCH meeting should provide investigators with the skills to advance the field and compound the impact of the community’s research efforts.

Participation is by invitation only. NSF will provide travel funding (up to $1,500) for invited participants. If you would like to apply, please read about how to submit an application here. Applications are due May 15.
