Combating antibiotic resistant bacteria

Ohio State Fair_073111 007_webThe Obama Administration has released a National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria.

Recognizing the important role USDA has in the issue, Steven Kappas with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) says USDA efforts will be in three areas, stewardship, surveillance and research.

Kappas says USDA and FDA will work together on stewardship.

“Working with producer groups such as veterinarians and animal producers to incorporate best management practices and reduce the use of antibiotics on the farm.

Under surveillance, Kappas said USDA is working to enhance surveillance efforts.

“USDA will also continue to work with FDA and enhance antibiotic resistance patterns, as well as antibiotic sales, usage, management practices at multiple points in the production chain.”

And in the research area.

USDA has been conducting, but will be conducting a lot more research and identifying alternatives to antibiotics for bacterial diseases, as well as for replacing the use of antibiotics for growth promotion,” Kappas said.
