Over the 15 years that I have been publishing YouGrowGirl.com, Davin and I have collaborated on a range of garden-related projects and products, including books (I designed the 1st; he designed the last 3), t-shirts, buttons, embroidery patterns, and more. So for the forth giveaway I thought I’d reach right back to the very beginning and assemble a super bundle that represents some of these collaborations. I even dug around in my office closet and unearthed eight of the many garden-related buttons we made over the years, including our very first: the Garden Hoe and my personal perennial favourite, I Heart Dirt.

Thanks again for continuing to write in, read the site, and indulge me in this month’s trip down memory lane. Keep growing!

  50. Plant Geek!! It wasn’t until last summer that I learned the difference between an annual and a perennial. My husband & I are no longer able to have pets because of allergies/asthma (we had litter-trained rabbits). I need something to nurture, so I have developed a passion for plants. Also, I have a number of health conditions, including multiple chemical sensitivities (allergic to perfumes, etc.). It is very socially isolating. Indoor and outdoor plants give me something beautiful to look at, as I must spend most of my time at home.

  89. I am definitely a Garden Hoe, I do work in a nursery after all. We have been joking for a while that we are ‘Garden Hose’ the plural version. We had even talked about a t-shirt idea with the word Garden and a picture of a watering hose. Your t-shirts are really cute!

  95. I don’t have the room these days to get out the garden hoe, and I’d be a very micro microfarmer, with our best balcony harvest being seed grown basil. I suppose I aspire to plant geekdom, with hopes and dreams of counting my houseplants once more in the hundreds, and bringing home new garden plants everytime I leave the house. It runs in the family, my grandmother used to slip cuttings in her purse whenever she saw something she liked. Thanks!

    I’m a Plant Geek – I volunteer as a Master Gardener in my county.

    I’m a Garden Ho – I’ll fiddle with plants & weeds in any garden I’m standing in, and I never shut up about my own.

    I’m a Microfarmer – We have vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers, and mushrooms growing in our garden.

  121. Garden Hoe! I love being out in my (and everyone else’s) garden. If I’m not out tending the garden, I’m researching, discussing and planning. Gardening is a most calming and rewarding calling.

  172. All three, but plant geek foremost, and discovering your website years ago was a life changer! While lost in it one day, I uttered the line my husband is still making fun of me for: “I love plants — so much!”

We’re moving to a larger apartment, and my boyfriend asks, “What are we going to do with 150 square feet more space?” My eyes light up and we answer at the same time: “More plants!” – although my response was pure enthusiasm and his was more of a *sigh “as long as it makes you happy.” I have to admit I’m all three. Plant Geek because I immediately Google every plant I acquire and started a library of plant books and seeds. Micro Farmer because I often squirrel away veggie and fruit seeds for sprouting (i.e. how I ended up with a surprise avocado tree in my tomato container). Garden Hoe because I’ve taken plants from a dumpster… on more than one occasion. Well, I had fun thinking of a response. Thanks for the chance to win some fantastic YGG stuff!

  177. I’ll be a microfarmer this year. Not sure if I’ll be getting a community plot, but I have tons of see. I’ll be packing our long balcony with herbs, vegetables and pollinator friendly blooms.

  192. I am definitely a microfarmer! Small spaces is all I have available, so I’ve learned to grow everything in the least amount of space I can get away with, and I’ve gotten some beautiful results.

    In what seems like another life now, I was the owner operator of a 48 acre organic farm…12 acres in vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

    I’ve now returned to my roots from 30 years ago, hand crafting double dug raised beds, supplemented with containers, in southern Oregon. Other than rocky soil, it’s a gardeners’ paradise.

  324. I’m a plant geek who loves dirt! And possibly on my way to being a microfarmer–I brought my pepper plants in for the winter and–surprise!–found 3 tomato seeds sprouting around them. Two are still doing well, so now I just have to figure out how to keep them happy indoors until it’s finally time to plant outside. Given that my garden is still under a few feet of snow, I think it’s going to be awhile…

  325. i’m not sure yet what i am. probably garden hoe. i have enough land, but the soil is terrible. i have completely changed my way of eating due to health issues, and really need to start growing some of my own veggies. so please count me in.

  326. I’m a Plant Geek! My nose is always in the books trying to figure out how to care for whatever my ailing plant is and I’m not afraid to grow something new!

    And I’m always stopping by my local plant nursery- they have seen my husband and I go from “just friends” to marriage and now having a baby! It’s pretty cool to get to know them through these years!

    I garden in a harsh climate at significant elevation, and I always want to know what my friends in more pleasant climes are growing while I am getting my usual bumper crop of lettuce and questionable harvests of everything else.

    This is a bit off topic, but there is a donation-based restaurant place near me that grows its own food (ant they try to do it organically).. the concept is “pay what you can afford” with a minimum suggested $ amount. If someone can’t pay financially, they can still eat but they will pay in time: either helping out in the kitchen or working in the garden.

As a matter of fact I have just come inside to take a break after pruning my crape myrtles, giving my monkey grass a hair cut and taking care of some much needed leaf raking. Today’s 70 degree weather in Tennessee is like being in paradise. Hope I win!

  381. I used to consider myself just a “plant geek” but since we bought our house last summer I am officially a “Garden Hoe”! Tha know you for all of your wonderful inspiration!

    I started out as a plant geek, but then using a garden hoe connected me so closely to nature’s beauty, it soon didn’t matter what I was tending or whether I was even in my own garden. And about 8 or so years ago, environmental concerns led me to try to be a mini-microfarmer on my balcony :-).

    At about the same time as I started growing edible plants, I discovered your site and began following you. I even have the Garden Hoe and “revolutionary” buttons, which I believe I may have won in a previous contest. I’ve always considered them collector’s items :-).

    Thank you for taking me down memory lane, too. This spring I will have neither a balcony garden nor even a balcony due to major repair/restoration work on our building. (We’re also losing at least half of our garden/landscaping that has been maturing over the past 25 years. Truly heartbreaking.) However, I’ve moved on and today I’m sowing seeds (tomatoes and eggplant) as I think of other ways and places to garden.
