Mock draft: Lions turn to Florida State's Eddie Goldman

The Detroit News

The third mock draft by ESPN's Mel Kiper has the Lions taking Florida State defensive tackle Eddie Goldman in the first round with the No. 23 overall pick .

Goldman (6-foot-3, 336 pounds) was a two-year starter at Florida State and captured All-ACC and All-America honors as a junior. He has power at the point of attack and ability to discard blockers, according to his NFL.com draft profile.

Of the Lions' need for Goldman, Kiper says, "Mr. (Todd) McShay made a good point on the podcast this week, which is that even if the Lions hold on to Ndamukong Suh they still need to add depth on the interior of the defensive line because they could lose a couple of pieces from last year's rotation.

"The Lions also need to add help along the offensive line, but even though you can't replace Suh from a performance standpoint, you can at least try to make sure the D-line doesn't go from strength to weakness in a single offseason. Goldman is a good interior defender who can occupy blocks and will flash quickness to disrupt, and has a chance to become really good if his growth continues. This is a need even if Suh is back. Without him, it's a true void."

Kiper projected the Lions taking Texas 6-3, 319-pound DT Malcom Brown in previous mock drafts. Brown's stock has shot up since the NFL combine with Kiper having the Texas DT going off the board at No. 17 to the Chargers.

Michigan State cornerbacker Trae Waynes will go to the Vikings with the No. 11 overall pick, Kiper predicts. Kiper's first mock draft had Waynes going to the Texans at No. 16 and to the Dolphins at No. 14 in his mock 2.0 draft.

Michigan wide receiver Devin Funchess, who ran a disappointing 4.7 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, is not listed in Kiper's latest mock draft. Kiper had Funchess going to the Patriots at No. 32 in his mock 2.0 draft.

Kiper still has Florida State quarterback James Winston going first overall.
