January cheese production increases 2.8%

USDA reports January 2015 cheese production totaled 980.127 million pounds, up 2.8% from January 2014. Italian cheese came out at 432.138 million pounds, also 2.8% above a year ago. American type cheese was reported at 393.382 million pounds, 3.4% more than last year. Butter production was pegged at 179.495 million pounds, down 1.6% on the year.

Nonfat dry milk powder for human consumption production was 165.786 million pounds, up 19.4%, while skim milk powder production was 41.207 million pounds, a drop of 30%.

Dry whey production totaled 76.506 million pounds, 9.3% higher. Lactose for human and animal consumption came out at 89.501 million pounds, 7.7% lower. Whey protein concentrate totaled 47.068 million pounds, up one tenth of one percent.

Hard regular ice cream production came out at 54.825 million gallons, down 1.1%, but lowfat production was pegged at 26.652 million gallons, up 4.5%.

Hard sherbet production was reported at 3.000 million gallons, a 2.9% increase, and frozen yogurt totaled 3.747 million gallons, a 17.1% decrease.
