Translation

You can’t generalize, but what I can see around me in any case is that very often one has several years teaching overseas. And then returns to France for a moment, for some time or more long term to take a break or start a family or teach French as a foreign language in France.

[collapse]
Translation

Basically, it’s a fairly precarious occupation. Once again, afterwards, I looked at other jobs, you can also find "long-term contracts" overseas or in France, open-ended contracts..

[collapse]
Translation

You can find jobs easily, but it depends on what you’re looking for. You can teach migrants in France. That’s a domain that is expanding a lot. There are a lot of teaching centers now, so there’s a real need for teachers for these groups.

[collapse]
Translation

As for overseas, it’s just as easy to find a job in my opinion. But you have to be a lot more flexible, because three-fourths of the time, maybe 90% of the time, you’ll have a local contract, and the salaries, vacations, etc. are negotatiated completely differently in every country.

[collapse]
Translation

In countries like Indonesia or Thailand or another, you might be paid a few hundred dollars, which is completely sufficient to live well on a day-to-day basis there.

[collapse]
Translation

In regard to costs, it’s not the same thing. They’re not necessarily going to pay for health care, they’re not necessarily going to pay for retirement either; you really have to think about the current context.

[collapse]
Translation

I think someone who wants to do this job is also motivated by that. It doesn’t get any less routine than that. It changes from one country to another, even from one organization to another; everyday life will be completely different.

[collapse]
Translation

It’s an occupation for real enthusiasts. I can really see that.

[collapse]
Translation

Plus, often, you meet someone, it’s not uncommon to meet someone in Thailand and to find him again three years later in Russia at another job. So there’s this community effect that is very, very strong.

[collapse]
Translation

And when you’re young, I think you can not look too much at that, [but rather just] keep getting experience because it’s really experience that matters. And then, I think there’s a moment you have to ask yourself some serious questions, because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
