A change in the pattern ahead for next week

Generally mild weather can be expected nearly nationwide during the next several days. Meanwhile, periods of rain along the Gulf Coast and in the southern Atlantic States will result in 5-day totals of 1 to 3 inches. Early next week, rain will also shift northward into the Mid-Atlantic region. Farther west, high-elevation snow will spread inland from the Pacific Northwest to the northern and central Rockies. In key watershed areas of northern California, precipitation will subside by week’s end. In the Pacific Northwest, however, 5-day totals could reach 4 to 8 inches. Elsewhere, snow will develop early next week across parts of the Midwest, while dry weather will prevail during the next 5 days from southern California into the Southwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to below-normal temperatures across the majority of the U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather will be confined to the Northeast and from California to western and southern Texas. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal across most of the nation will contrast with drier-than-normal conditions from California to portions of the south-central U.S.
