“A muddy mess”

“A muddy mess” is how most are describing Wisconsin fields this week. The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service, Wisconsin Field Office says farmers took advantage of the clear weather early in the week to combine corn and haul manure but temperatures climbed into the 40’s by the weekend and the ground thawed-out.  Most of the state’s snow cover was gone by Monday morning.  That is causing some concern for the alfalfa and winter wheat.  The last thing we need is a lot of rain and then deep freezing temperatures without snow cover.

As of Sunday, 91 percent of the Wisconsin corn-for-grain has been harvested but moistures are still running in the 20’s. The South Central district is 99 percent harvested while the Northeast district is just 80 percent harvested.

This is the last Crop Progress report of the season for Wisconsin.
