Growing wealth buoys U.S. meat exports

The value and volume of meat exports from the U.S. has grown significantly.  Through September the value of beef and pork exports have each exceeded $5 billion, according to Leann Saunders, the Chairperson of the U.S. Meat Export Federation.

“If you look at that achievement compared to, say, three years ago, in those years we were looking at just hopefully getting to $5 billion for the entire year,” said Saunders, “so through September, we’re already there.”

Saunders cites growing global wealth resulting in more people being able to afford meat.

“Growing middle class worldwide, rising GDPs, all of which you have mothers in those countries wanting to feed protein to their families,” she said.  “It’s a great spot to be in.”

Both beef and pork exports are about 15 percent, in value, ahead of where they were a year ago.
