Long-term sustainability for soil health

The Soil Health Partnership held its first meeting in Indiana yesterday.

Indiana farmer Brent Bible says the partnership is an attempt to measure soil health and to help farmers figure out what management practices can be put into place to improve soil health.  “We need to ask ourselves what methods or what management practices can we put into place that will affect soil health long term,” he says.

Bible says whatever practices are implemented needs to be sustainable.  “If what we’re doing today makes us a lot of money but in 20 years we don’t have any resources left to operate from, than the net result of that is we’re done,” he says.  “In the short term we want to make money at what we’re doing – but in 20 years we want to be able to say that same thing.”
