Corn is good, soybeans are better

Eugene and Betty Steiger raise corn and soybeans near Bloomington in southwestern Wisconsin.  Last year they had three, 300 bushel-plus entries in the national corn yield contest including a 315.2-bushel entry with DEKALB DKC63-33RIB brand blend which won the AA No-Till/Strip-Till Non-Irrigated category.  Gene says while the crops are good this year, he doesn’t think his corn will equal last year’s yields.  He has about a-third of his corn combined but the cool, wet weather delayed planting in the spring and the cool summer has the crop weeks behind where it should be.  Like everyone across Wisconsin, moisture levels are still in the upper-teens and twenties:

Gene has finished his soybeans and the yields were terrific: “We had one 11-acre piece that ran 81 bushels per acre.  Overall average on five different farms was 71 bushels.  Bushel weight is 57 to 58 pounds.
