Week of Makeup Favourites 2014: My Top 10 Mascaras and Eyebrow Pens

Happy weekend, folks, and welcome to another episode of Makeup Favourites Week! I hope you’ve enjoyed this mini series so far. If not, well, there are just a couple more to go so bear with me, okay? But if you did enjoy this mini series, there are 2 more coming so, yay! 😛

Today, I’d like to share my top 10 mascaras and eyebrow pens/pencils/things with you. I’ve lumped mascaras and eyebrow thingies together in one post because I don’t have many of each category to make up 10 products. I’m the kind who sticks to just a few products when it comes to mascaras and eyebrow things and when I find the ones that work for me, I don’t usually continue searching for better ones (blushes and foundations on the other hand? Whole different story). The ones in this list work very well for me so if possible, I’m happy to just hang on to them. For now, at least.

Let’s get started, shall we? Here they are in no particular order.

Week of Makeup Favourites 2014: My Top 10 Mascaras and Eyebrow Pens

Australis Voluptulash Mascara
I’ve talked way too often about this mascara here on BA so I will shut up about it now but suffice it to say, it’s my Holy Grail mascara, so cheap, love it to pieces. The End. 😛 (review here)

L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes So Couture Mascara
Next to the Australis Voluptulash, this is my 2nd Holy Grail mascara. Come on, a girl can have more than one HG beauty product, right? No? Alrighty then, this is my 2nd favourite mascara 😛 . I’m a big fan of comb mascaras because brush mascaras do almost nothing to my dead straight and short lashes. The regular Volume Million mascara doesn’t do all that much for me but for some reason, the So Couture one rocks. This mascara doesn’t smudge at all and has great staying power. I already have backup tubes of this as I took advantage of any L’Oreal sales at Priceline and Chemist Warehouse.

Australis Lash & Brow Extender
This can be used as a clear mascara for the eyelashes but I use this mainly as a clear gel for my brows. There are heaps of clear brow gels out there but I like this one the most. It keeps my brows tidy. It tends to become dirty very quickly if you put the brush back into the tube after using (my first tube was disgusting!) so I learned to give the brush a good wipe-down prior to putting it back into the tube.

Benefit Gimme Brow
I’ve raved so much about this tinted brow gel that I really should stop talking about it. Best tinted brow gel in my opinion. Love the tiny brush. (review here)

L’Oreal False Lash Wings Butterfly Effect Fibres Mascara
This received mixed reviews because of the oddly-shaped wand but it works very nicely for me. Somehow the curved section fit my eye shape perfectly and I had no problems with this at all. It’s not as good as the Million Lashes So Couture (lasting power isn’t as good) but it still gives my lashes volume and a decent amount of length. (review here)

Majolica Majorca Lash Enamel Glamour Neo Mascara
To be honest, I have absolutely no idea if this mascara is still even available or if it’s been discontinued but man, I remembered how awesome this mascara was. I used to use this a few years ago and loved it. It gave my stumpy lashes tremendous volume and length. I’m definitely going to check out the Majolica Majorca shelves when I’m back in Malaysia next year. Fingers crossed they’re still available because I’m going to be stocking up! (review here)

Shu Uemura Eyebrow Liner
Remember last year when I told you I had my eyebrows butchered at a Shu Uemura store in KL? The funny thing was, before I had part of my eyebrows shaved off, I actually purchased the eyebrow pen from them! Thanks to the eyebrow pen, my brows looked relatively normal and good after Brow-Gate. This brow pen was highly recommended by Messy Wands and I’m glad I picked it up. It’s very easy to use and makes filling in of the brows look very natural.

SUQQU Eyebrow Liquid Pen
Ah … Lisa Eldridge‘s highly-raved eyebrow product! I had to get one when I was in Japan just to see what the fuss was all about and I totally get it. You literally draw on fine “hairs” with the pen, which makes the brows appear full yet very natural. As the “ink” is light, you cannot go wrong over-drawing the brows ala Cara Delevingne. (review here)

Soap and Glory Archery
I call this a very close dupe to SUQQU’s Brow Pen. The “ink” is slightly stronger but it gives the same effect and results on the brows for a lot less money. It even comes with a wax pencil to hold the brows in place. If I have to choose, I’d pick the Soap and Glory Archery over the SUQQU Brow Pen because it produces pretty much the same results at a much lower price.

Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil
This is a great eyebrow pencil and one that I use regularly next to Benefit’s Gimme Brow. Its slanted tip makes it very quick and easy for me to fill in my brows. Word of warning: this can draw on pretty strong and thick, and can make the brows look unnatural if you’re heavy-handed with the pencil. If you’re new to eyebrow pens/pencils, I’d say try the Shu Uemura one out first as the tip is fine and it’s harder to make mistakes. Me, I’m lazy so the Hourglass’ fat, slanted tip makes it quicker for me to draw on, brush out and voila! Done!

It’s funny how up to a couple of years ago, I wouldn’t even think of using eyebrow pencils/pens/tinted gels because I thought my thick eyebrows don’t need them. Now, I’m loving them!

Stay tuned to tomorrow’s instalment of Makeup Favourites Week because it’s blush time, baby! 😀

Thanks Saumya! So glad you enjoy it!
I have thick brows and I still use the Gimme Brow. It gives my brows definition without looking too Cara Delevingne. Having said that, if you have very thick brows, then I’d recommend a clear gel instead to tidy it up, etc etc. 🙂

Great list, Tine! L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly (as we call it in the States) is one of my faves. If it had a non-curved wand, it would be my favorite drugstore mascara. Everyone has different opinions on which mascaras work for them, and I’ve heard mixed reviews on L’Oreal Volume Million Lashes but I may try it anyway since it’s one of your faves. L’Oreal recently launched a new version of Voluminous Butterfly with a wand that wings out/curves in both directions so it is next on my “to try” list since I can do one eye with the current Butterfly wand but I have a hard time when I have to switch eyes. My other faves are Too Faced Lash Gasm (even tho’ every one loves Better Than Sex) and Benefit They’re Real.

Ah yes that’s the one, the Butterfly mascara! Seriously, I had no idea what the actual name is; I just call it the Butterfly mascara. 😛 The regular Volume Million Lashes is just so so in my opinion but they’ve lifted their game with the So Couture.
I keep hearing and reading about the Better Than Sex mascara. Mixed reviews though. Your thoughts? Benefit’s They’re Real is not bad too.

Whee, Majolica Majorca! It has now become about the only brand of mascara I will ever repurchase. I used to swear by Sasa’s Sasatinnie one. It is so close to Majolica Majorca, but it just loses out on the mascara liquid. For some reason, MM got its liquid formula just right – not chunky, yet sets fast and lasts forever and ever. I wore MM to the beach, swam, and ran around in the hot sun, and MM never budges. MM also has the miraculous ability to automatically curl my lashes upwards.

I do enjoy a lot of Maybelline ones, especially The Rocket, and the old Intense XXL. I also enjoy L’oreal Voluminous. I like Clinique’s tiny one too, and those from various Korean brands. But I just keep going back to MM, and collecting them has become a habit.

MM is simply made for Asian lashes. I’ve tried another one from them (can’t remember the name) that has a rather funny oblong rubber wand and you wouldn’t think that weird looking mascara would work but it DOES. I’m definitely stocking up on them soon. Any of the rubber-bristled ones would work, I reckon.

Ahh the Clinique’s tiny one’s the one for the lower lashes, right? For those with super long lashes, those will go on the lower lashes but I have a feeling for me, it will go on my regular upper lashes 😛

if memory serves me right, MM has discontinued that mascara >.<

it's always a toss for me between Heroine Make's and MM mascara! They are the only 2 brands I ever use ahahahaha!

maybe try something else from MM? they do have another 1 or 2 more, though I am not sure if they are as good as the one you used before 🙂
