Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! I know I always say it’s been a busy week, but it has been a busy week. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been the especially productive kind of busy, at least not as far as everything unrelated to school goes.

We started off the week having lunch with Brian’s parents. I’ve decided that I should consider the possibility of feeding Josh steak and chicken for lunch every day – he worked so hard all afternoon and put forth more-than-usual effort in his schoolwork.

This was a project week for the kids and both chose to research pyramids as part of our study of ancient Egypt. I think Megan’s decision was heavily influenced by the fact that the Crash Course Ancient Egypt video was done by John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars. (You’ll want to preview that one. The Crash Course videos are the PG-13 sort.)

Wednesday was an eventful day. Josh and I started with breakfast at Chick-Fil-A. On the way home, we picked up some things at Wal-mart, included a plant to dissect (not as interesting as the frog, but not as messy either) and blue Kool-Aid for a Pinterest project Megan has been dying to try – like, literally. She dyed (do you see what I did there?) the ends of her hair blue. It actually turned out better than I expected.

She had gymnastics Wednesday and ended up being evaluated for team, something she’s been working toward for well over a year. After the coach evaluated her, he invited her to come practice with the team today. I guess that’s kind of Stage 2 of the evaluation. She’s never gotten that far before. She’s so excited!

After dinner, we took Josh for a shopping spree. He’s changed his eating habits and gotten more active. As a result, he’s dropped 15-20 pounds and his clothes no longer fit him. Yay! I don’t think he’s ever been as excited to go shopping.

I felt like I should explain to the cashier why we were shopping and that Megan had been shopping for her birthday just a month or so ago. I think she thought I was a pretty mean mom for buying Josh a pile of clothes and making Megan put back one of the two shirts she’s picked out because I was out of money.

Megan completely understood, though, and was content to wait and go shopping next week with the Kohl’s cash we earned from Josh’s shopping spree.

Yesterday we did our plant dissection. Again, not as interesting as the frog, but still pretty cool. I think looking at anything under the microscope is pretty cool.

I also made chocolate chip cookie dough icing for cupcakes that I made for dessert for dinner at my sister’s house. Oh, my word, y’all. That stuff is sinfully good.

I think we’ve lost another cat to the coyotes in the woods. Not Gus found us shortly after Gus the First fell victim, we think, to the coyotes and, unfortunately, you really can’t convince a stray, outside, male kitty to be a strictly inside cat. We haven’t seen him in just over a week. The whole family is missing him.

I took this picture of Not Gus last week just a day or two before he disappeared. He and Lily sit in those chairs like a little old couple.

I would say that I’m looking forward to a restful weekend, but I think it’s going to be nearly as busy as the week has been. Next weekend is more of the same. I’m looking forward to Christmas break!

  1. Congratulations to Megan! My eldest twin does gymnastics but started really late (like a few months ago age 11). She adores it and really wants to make the team but I’m not sure if she has come to it too late. What age did Megan start? Lil was put into a group with seven year olds yesterday and was not happy!
Oh, and I love Megan’s hair. Very cool, Pinterest is brilliant, isn’t it?

    1. Yes, Pinterest is a wealth of information. Megan was older when she started gymnastics, too. She’s 13 now and has only been doing it a couple of years. If I’d known how much she’d love it, we’d have started much sooner. When she was much younger, she took some homeschool PE classes at the center she’s attending now and didn’t really seem interested. For the first several months, she was by far the oldest in her classes and she didn’t like it either. All that to say, it may not be too late for Lil. These older kids are really willing to work for it if they want it, so that’s in their favor.

  2. Aww. I hope Not Gus shows up. I know the sadness of losing your cat to the wild though. We lost many of them that way as kids on the farm. Megan’s hair looks awesome! Congrats to Josh for getting healthier!!! Super awesome week!

    1. We’ve been told the Kool-Aid dye lasts about 2 weeks. That’s better than the spray and cheaper than the real thing which would also only last about that long in her hair.

  3. That’s so sad about the cats! We’ve lost three of our 4 cats to coyotes also! At least that’s our best explanation of their disappearance. One of them was named Lily! It’s so heartbreaking. I still get upset when I look at their pictures! Poor Bethany (our special needs daughter) is so afraid we’ll lose Flynn that she tries to keep him locked up in the bathroom so he won’t get outside!

    1. I completely understand your daughter’s feelings. We tried really hard to convince Not Gus to be an inside cat, but as a stray who found us, he wasn’t having any part of it.

  4. If your life is like mine, Christmas/New Year’s break is not going to be a breather either. I love reading your blog about your craziness too.

I have a competition majorette and a JV basketball player. Both girls, both early teens, both with 2 practices a week, both with parades and games coming up, a husband who travels (30-60% of the time), homeschooling, and the list goes on.

Keep it up and prayers for perserverance.

    1. Shhhh…don’t remind me. I’m enjoying my temporary delusion that Christmas break is going to give me a breather. 😉

  5. Kris, we have been watching Crash Course for the past year and, before your post, never knew that John Green was the same John Green that wrote The Fault in Our Stars. How clueless are we? We love his sense of humor and the facts really seem to sink in with my kids. Congratulations to Josh on his weight loss! It’s not too often that young men get excited about clothes shopping, but that definitely something to celebrate. And Megan’s hair looks really cool; we’ve seen that on Pinterest and wondered if it truly worked. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I didn’t know it was the same John Green either until Megan told me. The first time she told me, I said, in my best mom-explaining-something-to-a-naive-child voice, “Megan, sweetie, I don’t think that’s the same John Green.”

Um, yeah. She went and got the book and showed me that it is, in fact, the same John Green. I apologized. 🙂

And, yes, Josh is very excited about his weight-loss. I’m so proud of him and so glad that it was his decision. No amount of pep-talking or nagging on my part would have been as effective as him making the decision on his own.

      1. Kris, I would’ve done the same thing and, yet again, been proven wrong again;) Each year that passes reminds me how far out of popular culture I’m headed. Good thing I’m not too concerned with this:) Thanks for teaching us something new today!
