A mixed day in the dairy markets

A mixed day in the dairy markets on Thursday: butter continues to slide, dropping another 13.5 cents on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.  Cash cheese barrels slipped a half-cent while blocks increased 2.25 cents.  Class III futures were mixed as well: November up 26 cents, December down 3 cents, January up 6 cents.

Milk production continues to be better than expected in the Central United States thanks to increasing cow numbers and almost ideal weather for cow comfort.  NASS reports cow slaughter under federal inspection for the week ending September 27th was 55,400, 13.8 percent or 8,900 cows less than the same week a year ago.

Milk production is declining slightly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states but increasing slightly in the Southeast.

Out west, California milk production is steady to slightly higher, Arizona is increasing as the weather moderates and New Mexico is steady.  The Pacific Northwest, Utah and Idaho report seasonal declines in milk output although they are still above year-ago levels.
