U.S. wheat crop down 5% on year

According to USDA, 2014 U.S. wheat production totaled 2.035 billion bushels, down 5% from the 2013 total of 2.135 billion bushels.

The average yield of 43.8 bushels per acre was down 3.3 bushels on the year and harvested area of 46.476 million acres was up 3% from 2013’s 45.332 million. Planted area was pegged at 56.822 million acres, compared to 56.236 million a year ago.

By type, winter wheat came out at 1.378 billion bushels, compared to 1.543 billion last year, with an average yield of 42.6 bushels per acre, compared to 47.3 in 2013. Planted area was reported at 42.399 million acres, compared to 43.230 million a year ago, while harvested area for winter wheat was 32.304 million acres, compared to 32.650 million in 2013.

“Other” spring wheat was pegged at 600.753 million bushels, compared to 534.101 million a year ago, with an average yield of 46.9 bushels per acre, compared to 47.1 last year. Planted area totaled 13.025 million acres, compared to 11.606 million in 2013, and harvested area came out at 12.8 million acres, compared to 11.344 million a year ago.

Durum totaled 57.094 million bushels, compared to 57.976 million last year, with an average yield of 41.6 bushels per acre, compared to 43.3 in 2013. Planted area came out at 1.398 million acres, compared to 1.4 million a year ago, and harvested area was 1.372 million acres, compared to 1.338 million last year.

Illinois: Winter: 44.89 million bushels, compared to 56.28 million in 2013; average yield of 67 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago; harvested area of 670,000 acres, compared to 840,000 last year

Indiana: Winter: 25.46 million bushels, compared 31.755 million in 2013; average yield of 76 bushels per acre, compared to 73 a year ago; harvested area: 335,000 acres, compared to 435,000 last year

Iowa: Winter: 735,000 bushels, compared to 1.092 million in 2013; average yield of 49 bushels per acre, compared to 52 a year ago; harvested area: 15,000 acres, compared to 21,000 last year

Missouri: Winter: 42.92 million bushels, compared to 56.145 million in 2013; average yield of 58 bushels per acre, compared to 57 a year ago; harvested area: 740,000 acres, compared to 985,000 last year

Nebraska: Winter: 71.05 million bushels, compared to 39.9 million in 2013; average yield of 49 bushels per acre, compared to 35 a year ago; harvested area: 1.45 million acres, compared to 1.14 million last year

Ohio: Winter: 40.33 million bushels, compared to 44.8 million in 2013; average yield of 74 bushels per acre, compared to 70 a year ago; harvested area: 545,000 acres, compared to 640,000 last year

South Dakota: Winter: 59.4 million bushels, compared to 26.13 million in 2013; average yield of 55 bushels per acre, compared to 39 a year ago; harvested area: 1.08 million acres, compared to 670,000 last year; Spring: 71.68 million bushels, compared to 51.26 million in 2013; average yield of 56 bushels per acre, compared to 44 a year ago; harvested area of 1.28 million acres, compared to 1.165 million last year; Durum: 180 million bushels, compared to 168 million in 2013; average yield of 45 bushels per acre, compared to 42 a year ago; harvested area of 4,000 acres, unchanged from last year

Wisconsin: Winter: 16.25 million bushels, compared to 15.37 million in 2013; average yield of 65 bushels per acre, compared to 58 a year ago; harvested area: 250,000 acres, compared to 265,000 last year
