Harvest underway in southwest Indiana

For Southwest Indiana farmer Joe Steinkamp – this could be the best corn crop he’s ever harvested.  “It looks like we’re going to have record average yields on our farm this year,” he says.  “Last year we had the highest average yield we’d ever had, but we had some farms that had really high yields and some were a disappointment and a crop insurance claim.  In 2014, it looks like even the weaker fields will pull in near record yields and our best farms will do even better than last year.”

As of today, he says they’re about 20 percent complete with corn harvest.

Steinkamp tells Brownfield soybean harvest is just getting started in his area.  “It looks like it will be late next week before any soybeans are harvested on our farms,” he says.

And, he adds the crops look great, with very little disease pressure in both corn and soybeans.
