A wetter pattern to develop from the Plains, westward

Near- to above-normal temperatures will cover the nation during the weekend, but a surge of cool air will arrive early next week from the Great Lakes region into the East. Unusual, late-season warmth will be most pronounced from the Northwest into the upper Midwest. Meanwhile, unsettled weather across parts of the South will result in additional rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches along the southern Atlantic Coast and 2 to 4 inches on the southern High Plains. During the weekend and early next week, a surge of monsoon-related moisture could result in 1- to 2-inch rainfall totals from the Four Corners States to the central Plains. Also during the weekend, showers (locally an inch or more) will spread from the Midwest into the Northeast.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures and precipitation nearly nationwide. Cooler-than-normal conditions will be confined to the Mid-Atlantic States, while drier-than-normal weather will be limited to areas from the eastern Corn Belt and the Tennessee Valley into the Northeast.
