UNL honors former Ag Secretaries from Nebraska

Statues honoring J. Sterling Morton, Clifford Hardin, Clayton Yeutter and Mike Johanns at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be dedicated on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014.

Statues honoring four Nebraskans who have served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture will be dedicated this Saturday on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus.

The life-sized statues are of former secretaries of agriculture J. Sterling Morton, Clifford Hardin, Clayton Yeutter and Mike Johanns. The statues, which were commissioned in 2012 as part of the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862, are located in the green space north and east of Filley Hall.

The dedication ceremony takes place this Saturday, September 20th at 3:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.

Morton was appointed agriculture secretary by Grover Cleveland and served from 1893 to 1897. Hardin served under Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1971. Yeutter was ag secretary from 1989 to 1991 under George H.W. Bush.  Johanns served from 2005 to 2007 in the George W. Bush administration.
