Beef imports increasing

The latest Livestock Dairy and Poultry Outlook from USDA says U.S. cattle imports are up 9 percent through July and will probably exceed 2 million head this year.  That would amount to more than 2.6 billion pounds of imported beef, up 19 percent from 2013.  The report notes the pace of imports has picked-up in recent months while exports are expected to decline in the coming months.

The Ag Department trimmed their pork production estimate for the second half of this year due to losses to the PED virus.  They do anticipate increased dress weights as producers take advantage of cheaper feed.  So far this year increased weights have made up for most of the reduced hog numbers.  For the first six months of the year, hog slaughter was down 3.5 percent but total pork production was just slightly below the same period in 2013.

U.S. broiler meat production is projected at 19.6 billion pounds for the second-half of this year which would be nearly 2 percent above the same period last year.
