Enlist corn and soybean traits receive USDA deregulation

After one of the most thorough reviews of a biotech trait in history, USDA issued its decision yesterday to allow the commercialization of Dow’s Enlist corn and soybean traits.

Damon Palmer, US commercial leader for the Enlist Weed Control system says this is big news for the nation’s corn and soybean farmers.  “This is another technology that will help them get better weed control on their farms,” he says.  “Since 2009 glyphosate resistant weeds have more than doubled and are on more than 70 million acres of farmland and is a problem that growers are trying to manage.”

Palmer tells Brownfield the Enlist Weed Control system is a two-step process and the first step in commercial availability came yesterday.  “But another very important part of the system is the Enlist Duo herbicide,” he says.  “Which is currently being evaluated by the Environmental Protection Agency.  We anticipate the Enlist Duo registration in time for the 2015 commercial introduction.”

Indiana farmer Doug Morrow says the system is another opportunity to control resistant weeds on their farm. “I feel like this coming year – with the pressure I’ve seen already this year – this next year is going to really be bad,” he says.  “I think its perfect time to get this product to market and available for farmers.”

Palmer says, until Dow receives the herbicide registration from the EPA the company is holding off the commercialization of the Enlist Weed Control system for 2015.
