It’s Soybean Month in Wisconsin

coolbeanGovernor Scott Walker has declared September “Soybean Month” in Wisconsin.  Alice in Dairyland Zoey Brooks says it is an opportunity to learn a few facts about one of the state’s biggest crops.  “The biggest customer is our livestock industry” says Brooks as 98 percent of the soybean meal produced in the state is fed to Wisconsin cattle, hogs and poultry.  In addition, 65 percent of the state’s soybean crop is exported, “Two out of every three rows you see in a field are shipped out.”

As part of the educational effort, the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board has helped publish a children’s book entitled “Coolbean the Soybean.”  It breaks down the process behind the planting, growing and harvesting of soybeans in Wisconsin.  Brooks says it is great for kids but adults can learn from it as well.  The book is available on line at Coolbean the Soybean.org
