Foremost Farms installing reverse osmosis in Michigan

Foremost Farms USA and Michigan Milk Producers have formed a strategic alliance to balance milk intakes with processing capacity.  Foremost Farms has purchased and is installing reverse osmosis technology at Michigan Milk’s Constantine plant in south-central Michigan.  The technology removes water, concentrating three loads of milk into one for transportation to Foremost cheese plants in Wisconsin.  The first phase of the installation is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

MMPA general manager Joe Diglio says; “Michigan milk production has been growing at a rate of three-to-four percent per year.”  Wisconsin milk production has been relatively flat for the past six months and the state’s dairy plants have not been running at full capacity.  Foremost has been hauling milk from Michigan for the past year, president Dave Fuhrmann says reverse osmosis will reduce the cost of transportation significantly.

Foremost Farms USA markets nearly 6 billion pounds of milk a year from 1,800 owner-members in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Minnesota.  Michigan Milk handles over 4 billion pounds a year from 2,000 farmers in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.
