Boy Defecates In Aisle On Delta Flight From Beijing

49

Via the Shanghaiist (and be sure to check out the article so you can see the picture):

A Chinese family allowed their son to squat down and defecate in the cabin aisle of a Delta Airlines flight from Beijing to Detroit in the US, leaving other Chinese passengers onboard the flight shaking their heads in shame, Sina News reports.

Wang, a passenger on the flight, revealed that a pair of grandparents and parents paved newspapers on the aisle for the boy to pass a bowel movement publicly.

Passengers and flight attendants urged the family to take the kid to toilet but the grandfather insisted on letting the boy settle there. The whole plane reportedly began to smell, triggering discontent and complaints among riders.

I’m still not quite sure what’s worse — the story, or the comments section of that story. Sometimes I think I have trolls on this blog, but they pale in comparison to the ones on this article.

Like this one:

Why complain so much of us Chinese? We Chinese own 1.3 trillion of your USA debt so in truth we own you so shut your mouth. Guess what? We Chinese built much of the plane too. I love the smell of good poo on good Chinese.

Or on the other extreme, this one:

I know you Chinese own a lot of money to US, money gained in centuries of slave condition under Chinese and foreigner exploitation. The big part of the world bears China only for money, otherwise Chinese are nothing, less than animals…. great China!

Oh, the internet…

She starts explaining that there is nothing to worry about, that it is just pee and swings the bag in his face. I'm so glad it wasn't poop.

for those who report such - run them out of china?

Ignorance of the law is no excuse! This was an American flight! Quit making lame excuses for these criminals. If you or I did this on a flight, we'd be arrested! they'd devert the plane to do it! These people are safisticated enough to board a Delta plane, but don't know to use the rest room? HOGWASH! They were too lazy to get up!! They'd better learn quickly.

I also agree with @mcfocus that there are so many naive American say how much they know China... They just could not be more silly. I've lived in the Bay Area for 8 years and Indianapolis for another 4 years, and I could not fully understand the country, how could those Western people understand China just through Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. They're just like Obama - thinking he could help Ukrainian but never gave a shit.

@Jack @ Peter This is because America doesn't have public bathrooms available around the clock. It's not like homeless people want to just go anywhere. Would they be allowed to use the lobby or bar bathroom at the nearest hotel? Nope. I'm not homeless, but I've been in almost desperate straits trying to find a bathroom open to the public in Manhattan in the middle of a weekend day.

Some delta flights always smell like toilets. Delta's just mad because now they will have to pack pooper scoopers on all China flights and they are calculating the cost of the extra weight. Should have backed up a little for your photo of DTW Terminal A to get the fountain. Of course some might have confused the fountain for a group of Chinese kids who had politely held their pee until getting to the terminal....

Of course some might have confused the fountain for a group of Chinese kids who had politely held their pee until getting to the terminal. On a more serious note, this practice is not limited to China. Only a couple of years ago I saw a kid with his mom peeing on a street in an urban area on Jeju Doh ROK. I was told this was not a freak event.

If Air China, China Southern, or China Airlines wants to respect the traditions of its own citizens and allow such behavior, then they are welcome to it--but it also should be advertised that such behavior is tolerated by the airline. When a Chinese citizen flies on a flag airline of ANOTHER nation, however, it is the culture and norms of the flag nation that must be respected. This behavior described above is absolutely inappropriate on a US carrier (or that of just about any other nation's carrier I can imagine, to be honest).

This isn't about Chinese citizens--it's about this one ignorant and disrespectful family. The Delta crew should have threatened the family with being returned immediately to China on arrival to the USA for this incident--and had they done so, gone ahead and flown them back on a Chinese partner airline once they arrived. Such behavior is not to be tolerated in modern society, and INTERNATIONAL airline travel is part of modern society.

For the blowhard above who used this incident to cast aspersion on all citizens of China, you should be ashamed of yourself. As noted also above, you are a racist and bigot who should refrain from embarrassing yourself further with such horribly ignorant statements. There are 1.4 billion Chinese citizens, and I do believe this would be the first time I've heard of one defacating on an international flight. Yes, I've been to China and realize that in some impoverished rural areas, their approaches and sites for defecation and urination are completely different from our own, but that in no way reflects on the nation as a whole. There are plenty of places in the good 'ole USA where people do EXACTLY the same thing. Get a grip and stop being so bigoted, judgmental, and unworldly.

"American tourists also get a bad rap but we know that not all of those stereotypes are true."

To be fair ... American tourists get a bad rap for [some of us] talking loudly, walking & eating, wearing fanny packs, or being a little overweight. There's a big difference between any of those travel sins and pooping in a public confined space.

I'm sensitive to the fact that they might not have known this...

I'm sensitive to the fact that they might not have known this was unusual, but I do have several questions for this family:
    1) Where do you think everyone else is pooping?
    2) Who did you think was responsible for collecting your child's poop and when? Follow up: Does it not smell bad to you?
    3) Where do you poop at home?

@Joey - Dogs are allowed to poop outside because they can't be trained to do so in a toilet. Humans can quite easily learn to poop in toilets, and it's part of child rearing in most--though apparently not all--countries. There's even a book I'd recommend on the subject. http://amzn.to/1l5ikA6

nothing new to me, they have taken a dump at 2010 World Expo Exhibit hallway because the line was so long & they didnt want to lose their place.

I was in Taipei back in May strolling in a tourist district and saw a father lifting his kid up so the kid can aim and shoot into a curb-side trash bin. I can tell they are from China, because of their accent and clothing, and also I am a Taiwanese.

As much as I hate to see things like this happen, I don't think it is ever justified to tag a certain group of people like some in the comment section did. Then again, the internet is for the most part an irrational place, and particularly true for the comment section in Sina, so shouldn't be taken that seriously really.

And just a reminder of the size of the population China has. It is one thing trying to get somewhere with, say, 10m people (like Taiwan, Hong Kong or Singapore), but it's another trying to do the same with 1.3 billion. And in the foreseeable future we are going to continue witness a varied Chinese population. There will be great people, and there will be people less familiarized with the basics of modern society. This is also why I hate to see (and unfair really) that people start to tag people because of one or two cases they've seen/ reported.

In the interest of full disclosure I'm a Chinese residing in mainland China.

Just noting that Kitty's rant against Shanghaist didn't say anything about their stories being untrue, which is better than what you can say for most of the mainstream news outlets in China. Stick with your propaganda, Kitty, and that way your feelfeels won't get bruised. As for the actual story, well, the Chinese have now overtaken the Americans as the horrifying traveler abroad. This story is hardly an isolated incident. Welcome to the modern world.

This reminds me of how we end up with 10 page, fine print "contracts" just to do something simple like fly a plane (or 100 pages to buy a piece of land). Every sentence is the result of some ambiguity or "misunderstanding" that a 'reasonable person" had previously. So, we add a sentence to clarify. I guess my next Delta T&C will include "passengers are required to defecate and urinate in the rest rooms provided,...

I recently came back from a trip to China and was shocked by the cultural differences. I am American born Chinese . This was my first trip there.
