Overall the corn crop looks good

Greentown, Indiana farmer Denny Maple spent a couple of weeks in Asia on a trade mission with the Lt. Governor.  When he returned home, he was a little surprised by the corn crop.  “When I left the corn was just about knee-high and when I returned the corn was within a week of pollination,” he says.  “It’s amazing how fast the corn has grown over the last couple of weeks.  It’s done a lot of catching up.”

He tells Brownfield the corn started pollinating this week and the weather is nearly perfect for it.  “Overall I think the corn crop looks pretty good,” he says.  “I think there’s some issues, but once it gets tall enough you can’t see those from the road.  Our area had an extreme amount of water this spring – so we have some holes out in the field that will be a problem later in harvest.  If we keep getting the rainfall and the weather stays cool – we have the opportunity for a really nice corn crop.”

And, Maple adds they haven’t had excessive amounts of rainfall in the last few weeks allowing the crops to establish a better root system.
