Usage notes: When you can’t or don’t want to be too specific, the French expression à peu près can help you estimate or roughly guess at an amount.

Par exemple…

Je pèse à peu près 70 kilos.
Je pèse 70 kilos, à peu près.
  I weigh about 70 kilos.
Ça coûte à peu près 25€.   It costs approximately 25 euros.
J’ai un fils qui a à peu près votre âge.   I have a son who’s around your age.

  • (informal) au pif

Use à peu près without an amount to describe someone or something as "fairly ___" or "more or less ___."

Par exemple…

Sa taille est à peu près typique.   His height is pretty typical.
Nous sommes à peu près certains.   We’re fairly / almost certain.
L’infusion et la tisane sont à peu près les mêmes.   Herb tea and herbal tea are pretty much the same thing.
C’est à peu près tout ce que j’ai à dire.   That’s about / pretty much all I have to say.
– Est-ce que tu comprends ce que je veux dire ?
– À peu près.
  – Do you understand what I mean?
– More or less.

 À-peu-près is an invariable compound noun that refers to vagueness or an approximation:

Par exemple…

éviter les à-peu-près to avoid approximations
rester dans l’à-peu-près to be very vague, to stick to vague approximations
