Planting is still weeks away

It’s been a long winter, and for an Indiana farmer – the start of planting season can’t get here soon enough.

Randy Kron farms near Vanderburgh County, Ind.  He says their latest rainfall, which was over 5 inches, will delay the start of planting even further.  “We farm some river bottoms,” he says.  “With the state having so much water, our ground near the Wabash is going under water.  That is probably three weeks away – best case – by the time it rises, goes down and dries out.  The high ground we’re probably a couple of weeks out yet.  I’m hoping we can turn it around here.”

As Kron looks ahead to the 2014 growing season, he says one of his biggest concerns is profitability.  “Input costs have backed off a little bit, but not near enough relative to the drop in prices,” he says.  “We have had a couple of fairly good years and now we’re going into what seems like a break-even situation for the next couple of years.”

He tells Brownfield, they’ll be looking to see where they can trim costs and try to turn a small profit this year.
