A reader commented on a post the other day saying:
“I have some orphan hotel points (Club Carlson) that I am looking to convert to help me reach the next AA status tier, but….”
The main point of the readers question was to find out where to transfer the points, but what really stood out to me was the attempt to convert hotel points to an airline program to earn status.
Unfortunately, points transferred over from a hotel program DO NOT count towards meeting the status requirements on any airline. Like any general rule of thumb there are always exceptions and that is when a limited time promotion comes into play. For example, about four years ago, American Express was running a promotion where if you transferred your Membership Reward points to Delta you could earn elite qualifying miles to help you earn your desired status.
Many have commented asking about Southwest Airlines. Transferred hotel points (not Chase Ultimate Reward points) count towards companion pass status, but not A-list status. While the companion pass is technically a “status” with southwest, I personally do not think of it as an elite status where it gives you special perks the day or travel (priority standby, bonus points, etc.).

@Silver falls – If you consider southwest’s companion pass a status, then yes. I personally consider the A-list a status and not really the companion pass, but that is me personally.
