USMCA a positive step, farm bill not

The CEO of the Missouri Corn Growers Association says the agreement between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. to replace NAFTA appears to be a positive step but there are still plenty of concerns for corn farmers. Gary Marshall tells Brownfield they need to study the details of the USMCA…

“You know, we’ve had a real challenging growing season here in Missouri with the drought so it’s very encouraging seeing the U.S., Canada and Mexico all coming together on a tentative trade deal. Again, we’ll know more details in a couple of days. But, actually, this is really, really good news. We hope.” Mexico is the number-one buyer of U.S. corn and Canada is also a major buyer.

Marshall says the missed deadline on a new farm bill is a big concern for corn growers, “We’re really disappointed that Congress cannot get its act together. It’s not just this issue but a number of issues that we’re waiting for Congress to do something about.”

Marshall says corn farmers need the administration to allow year-round sales of ethanol blends greater than E10 and come through on its promise to do so.
