PrepZone Power Poll: Immokalee increases its stock with big win

Immokalee High School hosts Cypress Lake High School, Friday, Sept. 28, 2018.

In Week 5 of the high school season we had a team shoot up the rankings despite getting just its first victory of the season. We also had two teams stand pat in the poll despite losses.

The top of the rankings didn’t change much, but we could see plenty of movement in the final five weeks of the regular season as more and more county teams start to play each other.

Each week the Naples Daily News staff will rank all 11 high school football teams in Collier County from top to bottom. Here is the PrepZone Power Poll entering Week 7 of the season:

1. Naples (4-1; Last week: 1) – The Golden Eagles showed no signs of slowing down last week with a 42-0 win at Palmetto Ridge. Naples is the top dog in Collier County until someone can knock off the Eagles.

2. Barron Collier (5-1; Last week: 2) – It might not have been pretty, but the Cougars survived and advanced in a 22-19 at Golden Gate last week. However, Barron Collier’s rugged schedule continues with a rivalry game (Gulf Coast), back-to-back district games (Palmetto Ridge and Naples) and a tough closer (Wauchula-Hardee).

3. Golden Gate (5-1; Last week: 3) – In their biggest test of the season, the Titans did fairly well despite a 22-19 loss (a game in which they led 19-15 in the fourth quarter). Golden Gate didn’t do anything to lose the No. 3 spot.

4. Gulf Coast (3-3; Last week: 4) – The 47-20 loss to Riverdale looks bad. But the Raiders (6-0) are undefeated, and it was a one-possession game with seven minutes to play before Riverdale tacked on three late touchdowns. All in all, it was a solid performance from the Sharks.

5. Immokalee (1-5; Last week: 7) – This is the Indians team we expected. Immokalee showed how dangerous and explosive it can be in a 55-20 rout of Cypress Lake. After starting 0-5, the Indians might be able to salvage this season after all.

6. Palmetto Ridge (2-3; Last week: 5) – There’s no shame in losing to Naples. However, the Bears might be in trouble if receiver/defensive back Kamonte Grimes, seen on the sidelines in a boot at the end of Friday’s game, is out.

7. St. John Neumann (4-1; Last week: 6) – The Celtics took their first “L” of the year, but it came on the road at a very good Class 4A program in LaBelle. Neumann still is a contender in 2A-Region 4.

8. Lely (0-5; Last week: 8) – We considered moving up the Trojans after they battled and nearly beat Dunbar. But it would be hard to move a winless team past a 4-1 St. John Neumann squad.

9. First Baptist Academy (2-3; Last week: 9) – Due to scheduling difficulties, the Lions have played some teams well above their weight class. That’s led to a couple of blowout losses, including Friday’s 57-0 loss to Clearwater Academy International. However, six out of nine teams in FBA’s 2A-Region 4 make the playoffs, so the Lions have a shot.

10. Community School (2-3; Last week: 10) – The Seahawks’ two wins are against teams with a combined 0-9 record.

11. Marco Island Academy (0-4; Last week: 11) – The Manta Rays have been outscored 133-0 this season.
