MDA Commissioner wants NAFTA negotiators to keep dignity intact

The head of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture hopes all involved in the renegotiation of NAFTA are practicing civility and self-respect.

“My dad told me once that anytime you’re in a negotiating situation, make sure both parties get out with their dignity intact.  I think that’s important as we move through this discussion.”

Dave Frederickson tells Brownfield he’ll be traveling to Mexico in mid-October for the Tri-National Accord.

“It brings together the Ministers of Agriculture from Canada, Mexico, and the commissioners, directors, (and) secretaries from the United States, all in one room to work our way through this.  And what better format than having everybody at the table talking about it.”

He points to Canada’s dairy supply management system as a major obstacle to overcome as trade officials continue to meet formally and informally.

The U.S. would like to make a deal with Canada before October 1st.  That would allow Congress to complete its approval in time for Mexico’s President to sign the agreement before leaving office December 1st.
