Iowa farmer happy with yields, despite ‘roller-coaster’ weather

Central Iowa farmer Dennis Bogaards describes this year’s weather as a ‘roller-coaster’—a dry spring, a wet June, a hot and dry mid-summer, and a now a wet September.

Even with the ups and downs, Bogaards says he’s happy with his early corn and soybean yields.

“Soybeans look to be mid-60’s to upper 70’s—it just kind of depends on the field,” Bogaards says. “On corn, we took out some 105-day corn the other day that went 238. I think the longer-season corn will probably be yielding a little bit better.

“It looks like yields overall are going to be comparable to what we’ve seen in the last two to three years around here.”

Bogaards farms near Pella, about 45 miles southeast of Des Moines.
