NAFTA talks continue informally

NAFTA talks between the U.S. and Canada are expected to continue informally this week as the top trade negotiators from both countries are in New York for a United Nations meeting.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland left meetings in Washington last week telling reporters negotiations are continuing, and that officials are in pretty much constant contact.

The U.S. would like to make a deal with Canada before October 1st.  That would allow Congress to complete its approval in time for Mexico’s President to sign the agreement before leaving office December 1st.

Canada’s prime minister has said the delay is not tied to upcoming provincial elections.  An election in Quebec takes place October 1st and their dairy industry has largely been opposed to compromising on dairy issues.
