Agronomist says corn, soybean yields are looking good

Harvest is underway in the Eastern Corn Belt and an agronomist with Beck’s says he’s seeing above average corn yields.

“We’ve been really pleasantly surprised with some of the corn yields,” he says. “Some have been very, very good.”

But, Steve Gauck says farmers should continue to watch for stalk quality issues.

“We have seen some stalks starting to degrade a little bit,” he says. “So as harvest goes on, standability may become a concern.”

He tells Brownfield there have been some crop development issues in earlier-planted soybeans, but overall yields look good.

“Some of the first planted early beans have had some mold in them from all the rain but as we’ve progressed in later planting dates quality has gone up and yields have been very good,” he says.

Gauck says farmers should harvest crops whenever they can and not be afraid to dry corn if needed.
