Countries want to know more about trade relief plan

Several countries are looking for more information on the Trump administration’s $12 billion trade relief package for U.S. farmers.

Canada, the European Union, Australia, and others have submitted questions that will be asked at the World Trade Organization’s ag committee meeting next week.

Questions from Canada will include the impact of direct payments made through the market facilitation program and if they will affect the level of production and prices of commodities.

Submitted questions from Australia focus on how the US will prevent payments made in excess of tariffs.

Some countries say that the proposal has created an improper subsidy.

The meeting will take place September 25 and 26.
