Corn silage harvest races on

An agronomist says recent hot, dry weather is speeding up the pace of corn silage harvest in the Eastern Corn Belt.

“When we have this type of weather, the corn tends to dry faster than we can get it in the bunk.”

Charles Scovill with Golden Harvest Seeds tells Brownfield challenging growing conditions have made a dent in available feed for dairy farmers and average to below average silage yields will not help.  “With our dairy guys, they just need feed right now.  They’re going to be picking through fields and trying to find every possible field to get enough field stuff to make it through winter.

He also warns the heavy dews in the morning combined with heat is going to increase the risk of toxins in corn ears.
