Vincent Lyles, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, speaks at the reopening of the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club in Sherman Park in March 2017. The club had been closed for renovations since the end of August 2016.

Vincent Lyles resigned Thursday as president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee.

Lyles will stay on through Oct. 31 to assist with the transition to new leadership. The organization's Board of Trustees will conduct a nationwide search for a replacement.

Bob Mikulay, the board's vice chairman, will lead the search, and Susan Ela, a former chair on the Boys & Girls Clubs board, will serve as the interim CEO and president. Ela is the former executive vice president and chief operating officer of Aurora Health Care.

Lyles has been president of the nonprofit organization for seven years, making him one of the longest-serving leaders of the organization.

The company said in a news release that Lyles is taking a break before deciding what to do next and that he plans to spend more time with his family.

"I do have a daughter who is a senior in high school," Lyles said. "I took her older sister on college tours. I'm looking forward to doing that with her."

He said, "I am too young to stop working. There are opportunities that are in my future, but I would love to stay in Milwaukee."

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee offers after-school and summer programming for more than 43,000 children throughout the city. There are 44 club locations in Milwaukee and surrounding communities.

This year, an employee was caught embezzling money from the organization. Milwaukee police and the district attorney's office are investigating the incident and a resolution is expected soon, Ela said. Lyles' resignation is unrelated to the embezzlement, Ela said.
