VILLAGE OF MENOMONEE FALLS - Construction of a new Fiddleheads coffee shop is on track for a December opening.

Jovana Cubric, Fiddleheads vice president of operations, said the business is slated to open in December, although she said an exact opening date hasn't been scheduled yet. The historic Koehler-Zahn house downtown is being renovated as the main shop building, while an addition is being built onto it.

This Appleton Avenue location will be the sixth location of the Thiensville-based, family-owned company, which is planning another one in Brookfield as well. It will serve coffee roasted in-house, sandwiches and homemade bread and pastries.

Cubric said the company specifically looks for historic buildings to put its shops in. The Koehler-Zahn House was built in the 1880s.

"We cater to each of the locations we build out," she said. "We're going to preserve the historic style and combine it with the more contemporary look of the addition."

A garden room with rooftop patio will be in the addition, with glass walls that open like garage doors. Cubric said it will be warm in the winter — with in-floor heating and a fireplace — and open up in the summer to provide an airy, patio-style area.

Each room of the addition will be styled differently to accommodate various customer needs. And a conference room will be offered at no charge, Cubric said.

The decision to open in Menomonee Falls was partially based on the village's recent growth in development and population.

"We like to be part of a city’s redevelopment," Cubric said, noting that a Milwaukee location is possible. "We've been the kind of company that's organically growing … but there's the desire for more expansion."

Once the store opens, Cubric said customers can expect some specials and events for the first few weeks.

Fiddleheads Coffee Roasters opened in 1996 and has since grown to employ around 50 people, Cubric said. It gets its coffee from areas including Central and South America, Indonesia and Africa.
