Minnesota a leader in renewable energy

Minnesota continues to be a national leader in renewable energy.

Dan Thiede is with the University of Minnesota Extension Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT).

“Minnesota is a real leader in biofuels, but we’re also in to Top 10 in terms of installed wind energy capacity and are currently leading the country in community solar.  But we’re also a rising star on solar installations generally.”

Minnesota ranks fourth nationally in ethanol capacity and production.

The state also made headlines in May when it implemented the B20 Rule, requiring all diesel fuel sold in Minnesota to contain at least 20 percent biodiesel.

Thiede tells Brownfield agriculture and renewable energy go hand-in-hand.

“Whether they’re growing crops for fuel, or have wind turbines on their property.  Some landowners have land leases for solar, but then some choose to install solar themselves as well.  So there’s really a number of ways folks can get involved.”

He expects Minnesotans will see more renewable energy on the landscape going forward.

CERT is showcasing a documentary called “The Power of Minnesota” that features renewable energy success stories.
