Michigan ag director travels to China
The head of the Michigan Department of Agriculture says he’s working to strengthen relationships with trading partners in China while trade uncertainly looms.
Calling from Beijing, Director Gordon Wenk tells Brownfield trade tariffs have been brought up several times but they’re focused on crafting long-term partnerships. “Right now, there may be some issues around trade that may make it a little harder for us to move products into China, but we want to keep those relationships current. We want to develop new relationships.”
He says this week’s new tariffs from the U.S. have not generated any swift reaction from their visits but Wenk says trade issues need to be resolved as quickly as possible.
This week’s trade mission includes Michigan ag businesses and commodity groups. In 2017, Michigan food and agriculture exports to China totaled more than $67 million.
