Trump announces more tariffs on China start next week

President Trump announced an additional 200-billion dollars in tariffs on Chinese products imported to the U.S. beginning September 24th.

Trump and senior administration officials say this third list of goods will have 10% tariffs until the end of the year, and 25% starting January 1st unless the two sides resolve their differences.  A large number of fish products, agricultural, and manufacturing items are on this list for new tariffs.  Products removed from the original July tariff list include certain chemical inputs for manufactured goods, textiles and agriculture.

USTR General Council Steve Vaughn says China has not taken significant steps to change its practices concerning forced technology transfer and protecting intellectual property.

Trump issued a statement Monday saying that if China takes retaliatory action against U.S. farmers or other industries, he will immediately pursue phase three, which is tariffs on approximately $267 billion dollars’ worth of additional Chinese imports.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s Office says the list contains 5,745 full or partial lines of the original 6,031 tariff lines that were on a proposed list of Chinese imports announced on July 10th.  Changes to the list were made after the USTR received comments over a six-week period and testimony during a six-day public hearing in August.  The USTR fully or partially removed 297 tariff lines from the original proposed list released in July.  Certain health and safety products including bicycle helmets, child safety furniture, car seats, and playpens were taken off the list.  Certain consumer electronics products like smartwatches and Bluetooth devices were also excluded.
