Monarch population strong so far this year

The Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network shows the Monarch butterfly population so far this year is strong and at some of the highest levels in 25 years.

But, the head of the butterfly network at the Chicago Academy of Sciences says a single year does not mean a long-term increase of butterflies.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says there was an 88 percent decline of Monarchs in North America from the late 1990s to 2012.

While monarchs are plant pollinators they are not as efficient as moving pollen as bees.
