No movement yet from Canada on dairy

Dairy is still a main sticking point between Canada and the U.S. after another week of limited trade talks.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland was in Washington for a single day of negotiations this week but no major breakthroughs were made.

Media reports have alluded Canada could make concessions similar to its trade deals with the European Union and Pacific Rim countries, but no official statements have been released. In 2016, the EU was allowed to double its cheese exports to Canada while the Pacific Rim this year was granted more than three percent of Canada’s annual milk production.

The White House plans to sign a final trade deal in the next three months with Mexico regardless if Canada is at the table.

Canada’s entire dairy industry is slightly larger than the state of Wisconsin’s.
