WASHINGTON – The question when visiting Washington, D.C., isn't what can you do, it's what won't you do?

The Green Bay Packers will travel to the D.C. area for a Sept. 23 game against the Washington Redskins. This will be the third trip to Washington in two years for Packers fans, so regular road warriors might be familiar with the area, but here are a few things you might have missed, as well as a Packers pep rally:

  • Green Bay Packers pep rally, 6 p.m., Sept. 22, at Clarendon Grill, 1101 N. Highland St., Arlington, Va. Hosted by Packers Everywhere.
  • Free and name-your-own-price walking tours. DC by Foot offers guided walking tours throughout Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. Most name-your-own-price guided walks are offered daily from March through December and most days during other times of the year. There are family-friendly tours, adults-only tours and ghost walks.
  • The Old Post Office clock tower offers spectacular views of the city. The Old Post Office now is Trump International Hotel, but the clock tower is operated by the National Park Service. It is free and open to the public.

  • If you like history, there are few places better than Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. Mount Vernon is 17 miles south, Gettysburg an hour and a half northwest, Baltimore an hour to the northeast and Richmond two hours south. Manassas, home to the First and Second Battles of Bull Run, is 33 miles southwest. Of course, you don't even need to leave the National Mall to have a full day.
  • The District Wharf, which opened after the last time Packers fans were in town, is a mile-long stretch along the Potomac River that includes restaurants, retailers, residences, and businesses

More information on things to do can be found at D.C.'s tourism website, Washington.org. The site is updated with the latest festivals, events and shows weekly.
