Lighthizer shifts trade efforts from Canada to Europe
The U.S. Trade Representative is taking a break from negotiations with Canada to work on the new trade deal with the European Union.
Robert Lighthizer met with European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström to initiate a new executive working group. This is a follow-up to the July 25th verbal agreement between President Trump and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, where Trump said the EU would be buying a lot of soybeans.
Lighthizer issued a statement calling Monday’s meeting productive. Lighthizer says they will meet again at the end of the month. Then in October, staff will identify ways to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade before he meets Malmström again in November.
