College basketball: FGCU's Brandon Goodwin is back with the Memphis Grizzlies this week

FGCU's Brandon Goodwin is back with the Memphis Grizzlies this week after a strong NBA Summer League run with them.

Things had been pretty quiet on the Brandon Goodwin front, but the volume on the rookie from Florida Gulf Coast University went up a bit Tuesday morning.

The undrafted combo guard listed at 6-foot-2, who came off the bench to play the point in all 10 Grizzlies NBA Summer League games, flew to Memphis on Monday night and was getting a physical by team doctors on Tuesday morning.

"Mini-camp for right now," Goodwin said. "I'm just up here working out and stuff. I haven't signed anything yet. I think we'll get to that stuff a little bit later."

It looks like Goodwin has a strong chance to get an invite to the Grizzlies' training camp that starts Sept. 25, just three days before preseason games. From there, he'll shoot for a roster spot. The next best thing would be becoming a two-way player -- part-time with the Grizzlies, part-time with the G League Memphis Hustle. Or Goodwin could end up on the Hustle or even overseas, although it's getting late for the latter.

In Summer League action, Goodwin averaged 12 points, which was second on the team. In an average of 21.6 minutes, the Norcross, Georgia, native who played his first two seasons at Central Florida also averaged 2.6 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 turnovers and he had eight steals.

As he settled in, Goodwin feasted on the much more wide-open spaces of NBA play. During the Summer League playoff quarterfinals, Goodwin poured in 21 points in an 82-73 win against Philadelphia. The next night he went off on Portland for a game-high 27 points and three assists in a semifinal loss.

"I'm definitely excited," Goodwin said Tuesday morning. "I think it's Chapter 1 in the books, so I've just got to go out and play like I did in Summer League and continue to learn."

Summer League play is packed with rookies and other younger, often on-the-margins players. Beginning this week, that changes dramatically for Goodwin.

"It's going to be new group -- older faces, you know, like Mike Conley and Marc Gasol," Goodwin said. "I get to be around them and so it is very exciting. A new journey."

The time of his life: FGCU's Brandon Goodwin

Goodwin is the reigning Atlantic Sun Player of the Year who averaged a program-best 18.5 points in two FGCU seasons. He recently briefly visited the Eagles, but mostly has been back in Norcross, working out 2-3 times a day. He even spent some time with the Atlanta Entertainment Basketball League, a collection of 12 men's pro-am teams.

He said he felt very comfortable with the Grizzlies.

"I know my way around already, so it's pretty cool," Goodwin said.
