The first sets of election results from the Collier County Supervisor of Elections Office show Crystal Kinzel with a lead over opponent Don Berry.

Crystal Kinzel is the interim clerk of the circuit court and comptroller for Collier County.

Preliminary results are the totals from ballots cast by mail and from early voting in the days leading up to Tuesday's election.

According to the elections office, more than 37,000 people voted by May in this year's August primary and another 12,000 voted early.

Donald L. Berry, 77, filed initial papers with the Collier Supervisor of Elections office, seeking to replace longtime clerk Dwight Brock, who died last week.

That's more than half of the total votes cast in the election, making the early results a strong indicator.

With just two precincts left to count, Kinzel held a commanding lead with about 63 percent of the votes in her favor.

Kinzel ran on a platform of continuing the watchdog role filled by her predecessor, Dwight Brock, who died in June, halfway through the term he won in 2016. Kinzel said she'd also bring new initiatives on line, like training for vendors doing business with the county and making more records available online.

Berry said he'd strike a more conciliatory and cooperative tone working with other county officials and the business community.
