Weather widely variable across Wisconsin last week

It was another week of widely variable rainfall across Wisconsin.

The latest USDA Crop Progress report says clear, hot, and humid weather persisted until Thursday when a wave of thunderstorms brought moisture mostly to south-central portions of the state.

Pastures and crops that aren’t irrigated in other parts of Wisconsin are showing signs of heat stress, and reporters say corn and soybeans are maturing quickly.

Statewide, corn and soybeans are developing about four to five days faster than normal with 75 percent good to excellent condition ratings.

Farmers are preparing to chop corn for silage, and the third cutting of alfalfa is almost 80 percent complete as of Sunday.
