Michigan sugarbeet early harvest begins

The Michigan Sugar Company has started accepting sugarbeets in Bay City and Caro for the 2018 campaign.

Michigan Farm Bureau president and sugarbeet farmer from Tuscola County Carl Bednarski tells Brownfield it was very dry growing season in June and July, but recent rains have been beneficial.  “The crops that we grow on our farm, I think we’re probably back on track, the corn crop might be a little late.”

Michigan Sugar will also start accepting beets at the Croswell and Sebewaing plants on August 27th.

The co-op projecting yields to average 29.5 tons per acre and expects to process about 4.6 million tons of sugarbeets from now through March 2019.
